Dr. Mohan will assess your risk factors and then do bone density testing at her office with a gold-standard DEXA machine and then review the results at your appointment. She makes recommendations for treatment based on the test results. This may include medicines, daily dietary calcium, vitamin D supplement, and weight-bearing exercises. This is to screen for osteoporosis, which is a common condition for many women and men. It increases your risk of easy fractures, which then lead to worse morbidity and mortality for patients. Osteoporotic fractures can cause not only debility but incapacity as well.
Risk Factors for Osteoporosis :
- Postmenopausal age in women
- Age > 70 in men
- Family history
- Some ethnic backgrounds
- Use of certain medications (e.g., steroids, anticonvulsants, etc.)
- Smoking
- Excess alcohol
- Physical inactivity
- Poor nutrition/eating disorders
- Malnutrition due to underlying disorders (e.g., celiac disease)
- Men with low testosterone
